Youth Employment Summit 2006 to Convene in Kenya

With a captivating theme: Creating Markets…Unleashing entrepreneurship, the Youth Employment Summit (YES) 2006 will convene in the Capital city of Kenya, Nairobi for the 2nd time in Africa and the 3rd edition in the series of the Summit initiated by the Education for Development Center (EDC, an international nonprofit research and development organization in Newton, Mass. USA) to address the pressing issues of youth unemployment.

This year’s summit which would hold from the 13 – 16 September, 2006 will feature effective best practices and innovative strategies from Development organizations, International banks, YES Country Networks in over 60 countries, employment experts and practitioners, amongst others.

The Summit which would address unemployment at the highest level, especially among the young adult would work on proffering ways and solutions to youth unemployment through building youth capacity for employment, entrepreneurial culture, building trade capacities, attracting Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) and eco-entrepreneurship.

The Youth Employment Summit (YES) Executive Director, Poonam Ahluwalia, while commenting on the essentiality of building an entrepreneurial culture said: “Building an entrepreneurial culture is essential in order to create job in the public and private sector to absorb the youth in the labour market.”

She said that the YES Kenya Summit will provide a unique venue for young leaders and entrepreneurs from around the world to work collaboratively with policymakers and researchers to create innovative, long term solutions to the critical problem of youth unemployment.

“Without meaningful employment and career opportunities, the thwarted expectations of youth create a breeding ground for poverty, disease, crime, violence and civil unrest, undermining political stability, international security, and the effectiveness of capital investment.”

Hosted by the Government of Kenya and the Youth Employment Summit, an Education Development Center project, the Summit would highlight amongst other features:

* The Launch of the Global Fund for Youth Entrepreneurship
* Exposition of powerful examples on creating markets and how to enable youth entrepreneurship
* The Sharing of ideas on the methods of building trade capacity and attracting Foreign Direct Investments (FDIs) to promote youth employment, and;
* Provide a veritable platform for networking among delegates which include over 2000 youth leaders, government officials, Non governmental organizations (NGOs) and the private sector leaders from more than 100 countries, to learn from one another and build partnerships.

YES Networks which has presence in over 80 countries are out to make a difference as they are unleashing youth employment projects that amount to over 400 in the past 4 years of the start of the YES Campaign throughout the world.

The first Youth Employment Summit (YES) Campaign was first launched in Alexandria, Egypt in 2002 as part of a 10 year Campaign to create strategies and programmes to provide productive and sustainable employment for youth of the world, especially youth facing poverty.
