Speak Africa Media Training Workshop Opens in Addis Ababa

The UNICEF sponsored training for Speak Africa Challenge Finalists has commenced in Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia and the seat of the Africa Union on the 9th November, 2006. The training which is part of UNICEF plans to ensure and encourage young journalism and free and open media in Africa had gathered over 30 participants from 16 countries of Africa.

Opening the workshop, the Communications Coordinator of UNICEF Ethiopia and the Coordinator of Speak Africa, Indrias Igetachew, commended the finalists for making it to the workshop and advised them to make the best out of the training.

The training which is part of UNICEF’s contribution to the Africa Development Forum V (ADF V) has as one of its major aims to training young people in the art of media and reporting and to give them relevant skills that would help them in personal and professional development.

Also, the Speak Africa Media team will be working to cover the Africa Development Forum V which would be taking place in Addis Ababa, from 13-18 November, 2006 with theme: Youth and Leadership in the 21st Century.

The Finalists are expected and challenged to Speak Africa and Raise their voices against poverty, unemployment, lack of access to quality education, HIV/AIDS and bad leadership in Africa and also join forces with other young people to demand for good governance, accountability and transparency in African leadership.

The training which had been having its success stories would end on the 13th of November, 2006 to give the young journalists the opportunity to practice at the ADF V.

Commenting about the workshop progress, a Speak Africa Finalist, Florence from Kenya stated that it has been a great thing being to Ethiopia courtesy of UNICEF and participating the Media training, she said that, the environment is ok and the training too, “so far, so good!”

Speak Africa is an express it, exchange and new voice community for the African youth. It is a platform for encapsulating the voices, opinions, dreams and desires of African Youth. It is a place for youth activists across Africa to meet, express, exchange and share between themselves, between countries, building bridges of understanding and knowledge amongst themselves and with older generations.
